A SUCCESSFUL School

Is a charter school chain called Rocketship ready to soar across America?

View Photo Gallery — Rocketship prepares for its big launch: Rocketship Education is a chain of charter schools based in San Jose that is hoping to spread across the nation. The company is so successful in its classrooms, cities across the country are vying for its schools.

In SAN JOSE, Calif. — Inside a prefabricated beige building hard by the freight tracks, John Danner thinks he has solved one of the nation’s most vexing problems.

This is Rocketship Discovery Prep, one of five charter elementary schools founded by Danner that are bridging the achievement gap — the staggering difference in academic performance between poor and privileged children.  More…

Mexico dissolves its FBI and moves to legalize drugs

By Chriss Street

In a stunning development, President-elect Enrique Pena and his Institutional Revolutionary Party, who won control of Mexico’s government on July 1, moved to dissolve the Agencia Federal de Investigación.  Modeled after the United States’ FBI, the AFI was founded in 2001 to crack down on Mexico’s pervasive government corruption and drug trafficking.  More…

Dominant Dems rule and ruin Sacto

By Katy Grimes

As Democrats have taken over most of the Golden State, an ugly attitude has crept in. This bad attitude is demonstrative of what’s wrong with today’s Democrats, and why they get called Socialists. They think they are above the law because they now control the law.

With such little respect for the law, Democrats in power appear to think they are not accountable to anyone.

Character is how you conduct yourself when no one is watching. How politicians and public officials conduct themselves when one political party holds all of the cards determines the character of the cities and the state.

Thus far, with the Democratic Party in sole control, California has dropped significantly on the character and integrity scale.  It’s as if they can’t help themselves.  More…

John Stossel: America, the law-crazed

Over the past few decades, America has locked up more and more people.

Article Tab: image1-John Stossel: America, the law-crazed

Our prison population has tripled. Now we jail a higher percentage of people than even the most repressive countries: China locks up 121 out of every 100,000 people; Russia 511. In America? 730.

“Never in the civilized world have so many been locked up for so little,” The Economist says.

Yet we keep adding more laws and longer jail terms.  More…

San Fran Officials Subsidize Public Porn Viewing

I realize reporting on foolish and socially detrimental legislation from the hotbed of liberalism, San Fransisco, isn’t exactly breaking news. Of course they support far-left perversions of law; it’s who they are! That’s true, but I feel it’s beneficial to document such batty abberations at the source before other slightly less demented local governments pass similar measures affecting individuals outside of the Twilight Zone of liberalism that is San Fransisco.  More…

Correcting Some “Assault Weapon” Myths

It is natural for a free society to reflect upon its laws and norms when something like the Aurora massacre occurs. It is important, however, that consequential realities not get lost to hysteria and partisan agendas.

“AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers,” not citizens.  Thus opined Barack Obama this week before the Urban League convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Tell that to Syrian rebels, resisting the soldiers of Bashar al-Assad’s army.  Tell that to Korean-American shopowners, who defended their lives and livelihoods as recently as the Los Angeles riots, when police were unavailable to stop murderous mobs.  Cambodians or Rwandans might also beg to differ, recalling the genocidal films “The Killing Fields” and “Hotel Rwanda.”  Even the Dalai Lama is reported to have said, “If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun.”  More…

Immigrants Don’t Have to Prove They Meet DREAM Act

A top union official for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers said Thursday that President Barack Obama’s administration has ordered ICE agents to blindly — and without any evidence — believe illegal immigrants if they claim they qualify for Obama’s administrative DREAM Act.  Read more:

Democratic senators offer gun control amendment for cybersecurity billfered an amendment

Democratic senators have ofto the cybersecurity bill that would limit the purchase of high capacity gun magazines for some consumers.

Shortly after the Cybersecurity Act gained Senate approval to proceed to filing proposed amendments and a vote next week, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), a sponsor of the gun control amendment, came to the floor to defend the idea of implementing some “reasonable” gun control measures.  More…

Legislators Manipulate Education to Bring More Tax Increases

teacher

Support for education consistently polls well in California and that support cuts across party and ideological identification. Sacramento politicians know this and so, naturally, they say they love education too. But voters would be wise to take claims of support for education with a grain of salt. It’s not educating our children that most politicians [More…]

Public School Parent Trigger Laws: Something’s Gotta Give

school-buses.jpg

In the mid-1950s, the McGuire Sisters’ version of Johnny Mercer’s song about what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object made it to number five on the record charts. Their prediction, that “Something’s Gotta Give,” provides an apt description of the outcome of today’s battle between the parents of Millennials who want more say in their children’s education and the teacher unions and school district administrators who refuse to give up a smidgeon of control over the public schools they run.  read more »

The Attack On Chick-Fil-A Is An Attack On The Freedom Of Speech Of Every American

If you are an American, your freedom of speech is under attack.  Over the past week, remarks made by Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy defending traditional marriage have sparked controversy all over the nation.  Many Americans have expressed support for his remarks and many have expressed disdain for his remarks.   More…

California’s Green Circle of Hell

California is shooting itself in the foot

California, already in deep financial straits, is adding to its woes with an ethically feel-good action that will have virtually no effect on reducing world-wide emissions.

Two new studies are predicting economic devastation in California as the myriad regulation and costs resulting from AB 32, The Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, take effect in the next eight years.  More…

100 Million Gun Owners Didn’t Kill Anyone Last Week

guns SC 100 Million Gun Owners Didnt Kill Anyone Last Week

“Laws that forbid the carrying of arms…disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes.” – Thomas Jefferson

For my tenth birthday, I wanted a BB gun. Like the mother in “A Christmas Story,” mom simply said, “You’ll shoot your eye out.” Dad had a wiser response. He gave me a choice. I could have the BB gun or a pair of Roy Rogers cap pistols I had been admiring. He made it clear to me that once I owned a weapon that actually fired real projectiles — even if they were only BBs — my toy gun days were over. I chose the pistols, and he knew I wasn’t ready for the real thing.  More…

How California made liquid smog

How did a 1996 Federal Environmental Protection Agency “mandate” to clean up smog result in the California Energy Crisis of 2001 and the “wet drought” from 2007 to 2010?

This is a question that California water experts never seem to ask. But it is a question worth answering if California is going to understand how the cost to improve air quality conditions in California’s urban air basins got loaded into the price of water.  Neither can we understand what California’s new Green Power mandate and Cap and Trade Pollution Emission Trading Program are without first understanding what happened during the Energy Crisis of 2001.  More…

Convention time: How badly off is the CA GOP?

Just ahead of its “fall” convention in beautiful downtown Burbank on Aug. 10-12, the CA GOP is in a tiff with the New York Times over the status of the party in the Pyrite State. I have little faith in anything the Times writes. But the author of the article, Adam Nagourney, actually is a decent reporter. He wrote:  More…

Don’t buy NEA snake oil

Editor’s note: This is cross-posted from our friend Larry Sand. The NEA is the parent union of the powerful California Teachers Association.

The teachers union uses bogus numbers to con the public into believing that education needs more funding.

The National Education Association is relentless in its quest to raise taxes. In its latest gambit — “Massive Budget Cuts Threaten America’s Children” — the union claims that “…America’s schools have added 5.4 million students since 2003.” The only documentation for this outlandish number – an 11.1 percent increase – is a link to another article where they state the same fiction.

However, the National Council for Educational Statistics, an organization without an agenda, tells a far different story. NCES says that in 2003-2004 there were 48,540,375 K-12 students enrolled in the nation’s pubic schools. In 2010-2011, that number climbed to 49,484,181, an increase of just under 944,000 students – a 1.9 percent gain.  More…

California Focus: One-party government fosters secrecy

Much has been made — and rightly so — of the “budget trailer” bill passed swiftly and without public hearings earlier this summer that allows virtually complete secrecy to the new semi-governmental corporation that will administer California’s upcoming cap and trade program for reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases.  Read more:
